The Atlantic Division. This division consists of the Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Toronto Raptors. Let’s go over the moves and departures made by these franchises.
Brooklyn Nets
The Nets have made all the right moves for them. Why do I say this? Because they’ve retained and added players that will be pivotal to their future or will be important trade assets in the future or even now. These are the moves they have made thus far.
| 🗂️ Category | 🏀 Player(s) | 📋 Details |
| 🔄 Trades | Michael Porter Jr., Terance Mann | MPJ for Cam Johnson + 2032 1st 📦Mann via 3-team trade 🔁 |
| 🔒 Retentions | Day’Ron Sharpe, Ziaire Williams, Keon Johnson, Jalen Wilson | Team-friendly deals + options ✅Developing depth & continuity 💪 |
| 🎯 Draft | Egor Demin, Nolan Traore, Drake Powell, Ben Saraf, Danny Wolf | #5 pick Demin 🔥Traore (France) 🏎️Powell (UNC) 🛡️Saraf (Israel) 🎯Wolf (Michigan) 🧠 |
| 💭 Rumored | Jonathan Kuminga, Cam Thomas | Kuminga offer sheet looming ⏳Cam still unsigned RFA 🕵️ |
| 💰 Cap Space | — | ~$24M left 🏦Hunting flexibility & upside buys 🔍 |
The Nets have built one of the best young, potential-filled players since the draft. Danny Wolf, Traore, Saraf, Demin, Cam Thomas, Keon Johnson, and many others. With all that in mind, the Nets have earned themselves a B-/B for the offseason. Great foundation, now it’s time to build on this.
Toronto Raptors
To say the least, the Raptors have had a superbly underwhelming offseason. It seems as if they are still trying to heal after the Kawhi Leonard era. The Raptors have many holes to fix in their roster. Because there are so many holes to fix and front office issues, problems won’t be fixed in one season. Here’s a look at Toronto’s offseason thus far:
| Move Type | Details |
| 🖊️ Extension | 🧱 Jakob Poeltl signed a 3-year, $84.5M deal (locked through 2029) |
| 🎯 Draft Pick | 🏀 Selected Collin Murray-Boyles at No. 9 overall |
| 🧠 Front Office | 📉 Masai Ujiri stepped down; 🔧 Bobby Webster leads basketball ops |
| ➕ Roster Additions | 🌱 Alijah Martin & Sandro Mamukelashvili added as young depth |
| 🔥 Trade Rumors | 📡 RJ Barrett linked to possible Bucks deal |
This is evidently a very underwhelming offseason for a desperate team. However, there could be several reasons as to why they haven’t made many moves:
- Not many free agents are attracted to the idea of going to Canada.
- They are waiting to sign or trade for a big target next summer.
- Tanking purposes
- Only wanting to develop young talent.
- They are attracted to the idea of a Brandon Ingram led team
No matter the reason, it is safe to say that the Raptors have had a C level offseason.
Philadelphia 76ers
The 76ers are still trying to make the PG-Maxey-Embiid trio work. The Philly front office is trying to surround them with athletes, prioritizing two-way ability over experience. That being established, what have they done in the offseason to make this idea come to life. 🎯 Draft Picks │ 🏀 VJ Edgecombe (No. 3) & Johni Broome (No. 35) drafted
Re-signings │ 🔁 Kyle Lowry (1-year), Eric Gordon (vet min), Justin Edwards (multi-year)
➕ Roster Additions │ 🌱 Trendon Watford, Jabari Walker, Dominick Barlow, Hunter Sallis
➖ Departures │ 🚪 Guerschon Yabusele to Knicks
VJ Edgecombe was undoubtedly the best move they’ve made in the offseason so far. He was one of the best overall talents but also the most athletic in the draft. This move itself was a 10/10. Re-signing Kyle Lowry and Eric Gordon were also great moves. They re-introduced veteran leadership. The re-signing of Justin Edwards was also an amazing move. He had a great first season with them and in the future, he may produce great numbers to be a valuable role player in the league. The roster additions, however, were not as great as everything else. The 76ers have earned a B for this offseason. Not bad, but not great.
New York Knicks
The Knicks are the conference runners-up to the Pacers after falling short in 6 games. New York had a talented team but lacked the depth to make a deeper playoff run. It was enough for the regular season, but did not work out for them in the part of the season that matters most. However, during the playoffs, Jalen Brunson has solidified the belief of him being a superstar. New York’s biggest need was bench depth. Let’s look at how they addressed this need.
| 🧍♂️ Category | 📝 Moves |
| 🧑🏫 Coaching | 🧠 Mike Brown – Hired (4-year deal, replaces Tom Thibodeau) |
| ✍️ Signings | 🌀 Jordan Clarkson (Vet min, bench scoring) 🧱 Guerschon Yabusele (2-yr, $12M, stretch big) Dink Pate, Mohammad Diawara |
| 🚪 Departures | ❌ Tom Thibodeau – Fired after ECF run |
| ⛅️Current Free Agents | 🔓 Precious Achiuwa (UFA, Bird Rights) 🧮 Delon Wright (UFA, non-Bird) 🎯 Landry Shamet (UFA, non-Bird) 🛫 MarJon Beauchamp (UFA, non-Bird) 🛡️ Kevin McCullar Jr. (RFA, first refusal rights) |
The most important move they have made thus far is the Thibodeau firing. During this tenure he went 24-23 in the postseason, won the 2021 Coach of the Year award, and earned two Eastern Conference Coach of the Month awards. Thibs time in New York was outstanding. But not enough. After they lost in the ECF to the pacers, thibs got put in the hot seat. The Knicks FO ultimately decided to fire him and hire former Kings coach Mike Brown. They also added great bench depth with Swiss Army Knife, Guerschon Yabusele and scorer, Jordan Clarkson. The Knicks deserve a B+ for this offseason. They had great moves with little significant losses.
Boston Celtics
So much to say about Boston. They went from champions two years ago to a mid-level team. They traded away key players whose contracts were too big to keep and the nail in the coffin was the Tatum injury. He will likely be out for the entire season 25-26 season. Let’s see what they did to brace for this loss.
| 🧍♂️ Category | 📝 Moves |
| 🔁 Trades | 🔄 Jrue Holiday → Trail Blazers 🔄 Kristaps Porziņģis → Hawks 🔄 Anfernee Simons ← Blazers |
| ✍️ Signings | 🧱 Georges Niang (via trade, 41.3% 3P shooter) 🛡️ Josh Minott (2-yr, $5M, athletic wing) 🧮 Luka Garza (depth big) |
| 🚪 Departures | ❌ JD Davison (waived) ❌ Luke Kornet → Spurs ❌ Drew Peterson → Hornets (two-way deal) |
| 🧠 Injury Impact | 🩹 Jayson Tatum (Achilles tear, likely out for 2025–26) |
| 📉 Cap Strategy | 💸 Moved off $60M+ in salary/tax via Holiday & Porziņģis trades 🧊 Operating below second apron |
To say the least, the Celtics are certainly going to be a 40-47 win team next season. They are low on center depth and their overall bench is weak. You may wonder why they traded away their key pieces because I did too. It is mainly because of the new CBA. These trades gave them cap flexibility and saved them a lot of money. The Celtics get a C+ for this offseason. They did not make great moves on paper but they did save much money.
