San Francisco 49ers history & legends

The San Francisco 49ers began play in 1946 in the All-America Football Conference and joined the NFL in 1950. Named after the prospectors of the California Gold Rush, the 49ers became the NFL’s team of the 1980s and remain one of its marquee franchises. They compete in the NFC West.

Super Bowl history

San Francisco has won five Super Bowls. Coach Bill Walsh and his West Coast offense built a dynasty that began after Dwight Clark’s iconic “The Catch” in the 1981 NFC Championship Game. Joe Montana led the 49ers to wins in Super Bowl XVI, Super Bowl XIX, Super Bowl XXIII and Super Bowl XXIV, and Steve Young threw a record six touchdown passes in Super Bowl XXIX.
