LeBron James’ decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers was anything but straightforward.

The four-time NBA champion spent days weighing multiple contenders before finally committing to Philadelphia around 1 a.m. Friday. Rich Paul revealed on his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman that the process became an emotional battle as James weighed basketball fit against personal ties.

Paul said James seriously considered the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Golden State Warriors before making his choice. The Minnesota Timberwolves also remained under consideration earlier in the process before the list narrowed.

“I’m seeing the emotional roller coaster every single day,” Paul said, “Home is home [in Cleveland]. Miami is Miami. It’s Pat [Riley]. … I think that everyone was at some point leading the race.”

Jaylen Brown trade changed everything for the 76ers

While every finalist presented a compelling case, Philadelphia separated itself once it acquired Jaylen Brown from the Boston Celtics on July 1.

The blockbuster instantly paired Brown with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, creating one of the NBA’s most talented cores and dramatically strengthening the Sixers’ championship outlook.

Paul said that move altered the entire equation.

“Ultimately, Philadelphia makes a move and then boom! Now you got Jaylen Brown,” Paul said, “Now hold on, wait a minute now. This looks a lot different.”

The Sixers also possessed another advantage that none of the other finalists could match.

James has trained with Maxey for years, and Klutch Sports represents both of them. Paul explained that familiarity removed many of the concerns that typically accompany the arrival of a superstar.

Philadelphia can now deploy James as a secondary playmaker alongside Maxey while allowing Brown and Embiid to continue operating in their established roles. The fit gives head coach Nick Nurse multiple offensive options and immediately elevates the Sixers into championship contention.

James later confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that the opportunity to compete for a fifth NBA championship ultimately drove his decision.

After weighing four legitimate contenders and repeatedly changing direction throughout Thursday, Philadelphia offered the combination of roster talent, continuity, and championship potential that ultimately proved impossible to pass up.

The Philadelphia 76ers finally broke through against the Boston Celtics in a way the franchise had not in decades.

On Saturday, the 76ers secured a 109-100 Game 7 victory, completing a stunning comeback from a 3-1 series deficit and advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.

76ers make history against Celtics

Philadelphia entered the game carrying the weight of history.

Before this win, the franchise had never come back from a 3-1 deficit, holding an 0-18 record in those situations. Boston, meanwhile, had never lost a series after leading 3-1, entering at 32-0.

Both streaks ended in the same night.

The victory also marked the 76ers’ first playoff series win over Boston since 1982, snapping a run of six straight losses in the rivalry.

Embiid and Maxey deliver all-time performances

Joel Embiid led the way with one of the defining playoff performances of his career.

He finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists, controlling the game on both ends. Tyrese Maxey matched that impact with 30 points, 11 rebounds, and seven assists.

The duo became the first teammates in NBA history to each record at least 30 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists in a Game 7.

Maxey reflected on the breakthrough after the game.

Celtics battle despite key absence

Boston entered Game 7 without Jayson Tatum, who was ruled out with knee discomfort.

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla confirmed the decision pregame, leaving Boston to rely on an unfamiliar starting lineup in the biggest game of its season.

Despite the setback, the Celtics stayed competitive throughout.

Late surge seals it for 76ers

Philadelphia built an 18-point lead in the third quarter, but Boston responded early in the fourth.

The Celtics cut the deficit to one multiple times, including a late push that brought the score to 97-96 with just over five minutes remaining.

At that point, the game shifted.

Boston missed nine consecutive shots down the stretch, opening the door for Maxey to take over. He scored eight straight points in the final two minutes, creating the separation Philadelphia needed to close out the win.

76ers move on

With the victory, the 76ers advance to face the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Game 1 is set for Monday night in New York, as Philadelphia looks to carry its momentum forward after one of the most significant wins in franchise history.

76ers star Tyrese Maxey out at least 3 weeks with finger tendon injury

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without one of their most important players for the immediate future.

The team announced Tuesday that star guard Tyrese Maxey suffered a tendon injury in his right pinkie and will undergo reevaluation in approximately three weeks.

Maxey suffered the injury late in Philadelphia’s loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. With just 16 seconds remaining, Maxey collided with teammate Adem Bona during a play and immediately grabbed his right hand. He quickly walked off the court and headed directly to the locker room while holding his hand under his jersey.

Initial tests revealed no fractures, but further evaluation revealed the tendon issue.

Head coach Nick Nurse addressed the situation following Philadelphia’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies, as first reported in an article published on ESPN.com.

“Obviously, it’s a huge blow for him,” Nurse said after the game. “He’s having an all-NBA season. Just hoping it heals really, really quick, and he gets back to where it doesn’t bother him at all. He’s obviously played tremendous. Obviously puts us in a bind with some of the other guys out, too. Just hopefully these two or three weeks will whiz by and he’ll be ready to go.”

Maxey has been enjoying the best season of his career. Across 61 games, he is averaging career highs with 29 points, 6.7 assists, 4.1 rebounds, two steals and 0.8 blocks per game.

His scoring production currently ranks fourth in the NBA. The 76ers guard holds the highest scoring average by a 76ers guard since Allen Iverson during the 2005-06 season.

Maxey’s impact has also extended to the defensive side. He is the only player in the NBA this season with at least 100 steals and 50 blocks.

Philadelphia has been noticeably stronger with Maxey in the lineup. The 76ers are 33-28 with him available compared to 2-2 in games he has missed.

The timing of the injury is difficult for a team already dealing with absences from other key players. Joel Embiid has missed five straight games with a right oblique strain, while Paul George is currently serving a 25-game suspension for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program.

Over the last two seasons, Philadelphia has played just 31 games with Embiid, George and Maxey all available.

Maxey also leads the NBA in minutes per game and total miles traveled this season, reflecting the heavy workload he has carried for the team.

The 76ers currently sit eighth in the Eastern Conference standings. With the regular season concluding April 12, Maxey’s return timeline could also impact his eligibility for All-NBA honors if he misses additional games.
