Draymond Green’s future with the Golden State Warriors appears to be moving toward another season in the Bay Area, but the larger meaning of his expected decision goes beyond simply staying put.
Popular basketball account @Fullcourtpass shared on X, formerly Twitter, that ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported Green is expecting to pick up his $27.6 million player option. That would keep him with Golden State on an expiring one-year deal, while also giving the Warriors a meaningful salary-matching piece if they explore the trade market.

That matters because the Warriors are entering a complicated offseason. Stephen Curry remains the focal point, but Golden State must decide whether to continue with its veteran core or reshape the roster around younger, more athletic players. Green’s expiring $27.6 million salary gives the front office optionality.
On the court, Green is no longer the same all-purpose force he was during Golden State’s championship peak. During the 2025-26 season, he averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.5 assists across 68 games. He also shot 41.8 percent from the field and 32.6 percent from 3-point range.
The playmaking still matters. Green remains one of the smartest defensive communicators in the league, and his chemistry with Curry still carries value. However, the numbers show a veteran shifting into a different stage of his career.
That leaves Golden State with a decision that could shape the rest of the Curry era. The Warriors can keep Green as a veteran leader, defensive voice, and trusted connector for one more season. They can also view his expiring salary as a path to a larger roster move if the right trade develops.
Either way, Green’s expected option decision is about more than one contract. It shows where the Warriors stand as a franchise. Their core still carries history, but their roster needs more youth, athleticism, and long-term flexibility.
