The Atlanta Falcons are giving Tua Tagovailoa a new opportunity.

Atlanta signed the former Miami Dolphins quarterback to a one-year, $1.3 million deal after his release, adding competition and depth to a reshaped quarterback room.

Tagovailoa is coming off a difficult 2025 season in Miami, where he threw 15 interceptions and was eventually benched as the team struggled.

โ€œMy play wasn’t up to the standard of the way I’ve been playing football the past three years,โ€ Tagovailoa said Tuesday, as noted in an article by Yahoo Sports’s Jay Busbee. โ€œGot to play better football. Thatโ€™s what that really means. Thereโ€™s no other way to sugarcoat that or go around that.โ€ (SOURCE)

Falcons reset quarterback room

Atlantaโ€™s quarterback situation remains fluid entering 2026.

Michael Penix Jr. is working his way back from a torn ACL suffered late last season, while veteran Kirk Cousins was released earlier this offseason.

That opens the door for Tagovailoa to compete for snaps, whether as a bridge option early in the season or as part of an ongoing competition.

โ€œFor Tua coming in here, he knows he’s coming in to compete,โ€ general manager Ian Cunningham said. โ€œJust like Michael knows that he’s coming in to compete.โ€

New leadership in Atlanta

The Falcons are also entering a new era across the organization.

Atlanta hired Kevin Stefanski as head coach while bringing in Cunningham to lead the front office. Franchise legend Matt Ryan now serves in a leadership role as president of football operations.

The new group will be tasked with maximizing a roster that includes playmakers such as Kyle Pitts, Drake London, and Bijan Robinson.

Opportunity for redemption

Despite the setbacks, Tagovailoa views the move as a chance to reset his career.

โ€œLast year wasn’t the best year for me,โ€ Tagovailoa said. โ€œI’m looking for a fresh start, but fresh start in the sense of being able to compete, being able to go back out there and playing football, good football. And I think the best football is still ahead of me.โ€

Over his career, Tagovailoa has thrown for more than 18,000 yards with 120 touchdowns, but injuries and inconsistency have defined stretches of his tenure.

Now in Atlanta, he enters a competitive situation with the opportunity to reestablish himself.

โ€œCompetition is just a thing in the NFL,โ€ Tagovailoa said. โ€œI am no stranger to competition.โ€

With a new team, new leadership, and a fresh opportunity, Tagovailoa will look to prove he can still perform at a high level in 2026.
