The New York Knicks are adding athletic depth to their wing rotation.
Free agent forward Jeremy Sochan intends to sign with New York after clearing waivers, his agent Deirunas Visockas of Gersh Sports confirmed to ESPN. The deal will run through the remainder of the season.
Sochan became available after the San Antonio Spurs released him Wednesday. According to his representation, 10 teams expressed interest before the 22-year-old chose New York as his next destination.
A Versatile Addition
At 6-foot-8, Sochan gives the Knicks length, defensive versatility and youth on the perimeter. The former No. 9 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft averaged 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds over 212 career games with San Antonio.
During his rookie and sophomore seasons, he participated in the NBA Rising Stars event twice, showcasing his development trajectory early in his career.
This season, however, his role diminished. In 28 appearances, Sochan averaged 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and one assist while shooting 47.5% from the field. His minutes declined in part due to the emergence of rookie forward Carter Bryant, the No. 14 pick in the 2025 draft.
Untapped Upside
Sochan flashed offensive potential during the Spursβ experimentation phase last season, when the team deployed him at point guard alongside Victor Wembanyama. In one standout performance, Sochan posted 31 points and 14 rebounds while handling primary playmaking duties.
While his role fluctuated in San Antonio, his defensive reputation remained intact. Coaches often tasked him with guarding top opposing scorers, valuing his lateral quickness and size.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged the mutual decision to move forward.
βWe were aware of his desire to be in the rotation and have more opportunity,β Johnson said before Wednesdayβs game. βWe wanted to make sure he had that chance.β
A Fresh Start in New York
The Knicks entered the post-trade deadline stretch seeking additional wing depth. Sochanβs athletic profile and defensive instincts provide lineup flexibility for a team looking to solidify its rotation heading toward the postseason.
In a social media post Thursday, Sochan expressed gratitude to San Antonio, calling his time there the longest he has stayed in one place since age 15.
Now, he turns the page in New York β aiming to reclaim a consistent role and reestablish his upward trajector
