The Tennessee Titans aren’t preparing to change quarterbacks. Head coach Robert Saleh has not considered benching Cam Ward despite an 0-3 start, according to Pro Football Talk.
That support follows a painful finish against the New York Giants. With Tennessee threatening to steal a road victory Sunday, Ward threw an interception to safety Jevon Holland with 17 seconds remaining. The turnover sealed a 12-7 loss and erased the Titans’ final opportunity to secure their first win.
Ward completed 23 of 36 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His fourth-quarter scoring pass to Wan’Dale Robinson brought Tennessee within striking distance, but the comeback ended seven yards from the end zone.
Cam Ward keeps Saleh’s backing ahead of Ravens matchup
During Monday’s media availability, Saleh acknowledged Ward’s mistake while defending his overall judgment. He maintained that the costly throw did not reflect a quarterback who routinely disregards ball security.
Saleh offered this assessment, according to a piece published on the Titans’ official website.
“Bad decision, not a reckless decision, bad decision, which I’m sure he recognizes. But Cam is far from reckless.”
The larger concern extends beyond the final possession. Tennessee opened Sunday’s game with five consecutive three-and-outs and produced only 54 yards before halftime. The Giants also finished without a sack, making it difficult to place the offensive struggles entirely on pass protection.
For Ward, the next step is making the offense productive before a late comeback becomes necessary. A quarterback can show resilience in the fourth quarter and still leave his team with too much to overcome through earlier missed opportunities.
Saleh’s backing gives Ward another chance to address those problems. It does little to ease the urgency surrounding an offense still searching for consistency.
The Titans visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, with Ward facing the task of turning his coach’s confidence into Tennessee’s first victory.
