The Detroit Tigers will be without one of their starting pitchers after Major League Baseball handed down discipline following Tuesday night’s incident against the Boston Red Sox.
MLB reduced Framber Valdez’s suspension from six games to five, and the left-hander will begin serving the penalty immediately.
Tigers dealing with fallout after benches clear
The suspension stems from an incident involving Trevor Story during Detroit’s loss to Boston.
Valdez hit Story with a pitch in the fourth inning shortly after allowing back-to-back home runs. The situation quickly escalated, leading to benches and bullpens clearing before Valdez was ejected from the game.
MLB later ruled that the pitch was intentional, resulting in the suspension and an undisclosed fine.
Manager A.J. Hinch also received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine.
Tigers facing rotation concerns
The timing creates another challenge for Detroit’s pitching staff.
MLB rules prevent teams from replacing suspended players on the roster during on-field discipline, so the Tigers will operate short-handed while Valdez serves the suspension.
The club already has several pitchers sidelined, including Tarik Skubal, Justin Verlander, Casey Mize, Jackson Jobe, Troy Melton, and Reese Olson on the injured list.
Detroit now must adjust its rotation plans moving forward.
Valdez struggled before ejection
Before the incident, Valdez endured one of his roughest outings of the season.
Boston tagged him for 10 runs, seven earned, across just over three innings. The Red Sox opened the fourth inning with home runs from Willson Contreras and Wilyer Abreu before Story was hit by the pitch that sparked the confrontation.
The pitch immediately drew attention because Valdez rarely throws four-seam fastballs, and reports noted it was his first four-seamer of the season.
Tigers searching for answers
Detroit now faces both disciplinary fallout and roster complications at a difficult point in the season.
With injuries already testing the pitching depth, the Tigers may need to consider bullpen games, spot starts, or internal call-ups to navigate Valdez’s absence.
For now, the organization shifts focus toward stabilizing a rotation that continues to absorb major hits early in the 2026 campaign.
