Aaron Donald’s potential Rams comeback takes major step forward

The Los Angeles Rams might be on the verge of turning a far-fetched offseason dream into a terrifying reality for the rest of the NFL.

After Aaron Donald recently completed a workout in Los Angeles, per Reuters, momentum surrounding a reunion between the retired defensive tackle and his former team has reportedly increased. The workout represents another meaningful development as Donald evaluates whether his body can withstand an NFL return at 35 years old.

Bleacher Report’s James Palmer said on his X, formerly Twitter, account that the possibility is “starting to gain steam,” though Donald must still determine whether his elite conditioning can translate back into football performance.

“He’s stayed in remarkable shape,” Palmer stated in the clip. “But there are differences between football shape and staying in shape. And no one knows that better, probably, than Aaron Donald.”

The Rams have expressed interest in a reunion while allowing Donald to dictate the pace of the process. Los Angeles has not mounted an aggressive pursuit, and the two sides have yet to enter substantive contract talks.

Palmer noted that the financial details “could be worked out relatively easily” if the former Rams star decides to return.

“If we’re looking at a timeline, we would probably know a handful of days, just a guess, before the start of training camp,” Palmer added.

The Myles Garrett trade ultimately changed the Rams’ outlook

Donald’s potential comeback has gained traction since Los Angeles acquired Myles Garrett, creating the possibility of pairing two of the most dominant defensive players of their generation.

The Rams’ addition of Garrett gives Donald a compelling reason to consider one more championship pursuit. Garrett’s presence would also reduce the attention opposing offenses could devote to Donald, allowing the former Rams star to operate without carrying the entire defensive front.

Los Angeles would likely manage Donald’s workload rather than immediately return him to an every-down role. The Rams could deploy him primarily in passing situations and preserve his body for critical downs and postseason football.

That approach would allow Donald to make a meaningful impact without requiring him to reproduce the snap volume that defined his prime.

Donald would face unprecedented challenge

Only a few elite players have returned successfully after spending multiple seasons away from the NFL.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero recently pointed to Deion Sanders as a rare example of a future Hall of Famer returning after an extended absence in another post to the platform. Sanders played a reduced role for Baltimore in 2004 and 2005 after sitting out three seasons, producing solid results without reaching his previous standard.

Donald would face a similar challenge.

He retired after the 2023 season following a decade in which he earned 10 Pro Bowl selections, eight first-team All-Pro honors, and three Defensive Player of the Year awards. Even a diminished version of Donald, however, could substantially strengthen an already imposing Los Angeles defense.

The Rams would not need him to recreate every element of his historic peak. If Donald can return at even a fraction below his prime level, his explosiveness, technique, and experience could transform the team’s championship ceiling.

Los Angeles already entered 2026 with enormous expectations. Adding Donald beside Garrett could give the Rams one of the most intimidating defensive fronts in recent NFL history.

For now, the decision remains Donald’s.

But after weeks of speculation, a return no longer feels impossible. The next step may determine whether one of football’s greatest defenders has one final season left in him.

QB Carson Wentz to visit Vikings as team explores veteran depth

Carson Wentz is trying to work his way back into the NFL, and his latest opportunity may come with the Minnesota Vikings. According to ESPN’s Lindsey Thiry, the veteran quarterback is visiting the Vikings as the team evaluates its quarterback depth heading into the 2025 regular season.

Minnesota isn’t desperate for help under center, but questions remain pertaining the team’s depth under center, especially behind JJ McCarthy. Bringing in a seasoned veteran like Wentz makes sense. The 32-year-old remains unsigned as the preseason wraps up, and this visit could mark the next step toward a return to the league.

The Vikings quarterback news this offseason included the departure of Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks in free agency. That left McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick, as the expected starter — a role he never got to assume last year due to injury. The former Michigan standout and national champion is clearly the franchise’s focus moving forward, but surrounding him with experienced depth is now on the table.

Minnesota acquired Sam Howell during April’s draft and initially penciled him in as the likely No. 2. But Howell was held out of the team’s preseason finale, leaving Max Brosmer and Brett Rypien to take the snaps. Both quarterbacks face long odds to crack the 53-man roster ahead of Tuesday’s cut deadline.

Wentz last played on Jan. 5, 2025, starting for the Kansas City Chiefs in their 38–0 loss to the Denver Broncos to close the 2024-2025 regular season. He completed 10-of-17 passes for 98 yards in that game — his only appearance of the year.

Since his five-year stint with Philadelphia ended, Wentz has made one-year stops with the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams and Chiefs. Once seen as a franchise cornerstone, the 2017 MVP candidate now profiles as a veteran backup who brings 94 career starts and postseason experience — traits the Vikings may value as McCarthy returns from a year-long absence.

The move would also reunite Wentz with a familiar face: quarterbacks coach Josh McCown. McCown played behind Wentz during the 2019 season in Philadelphia and joined Minnesota’s coaching staff in 2024.

With more than $30 million in cap space and four quarterbacks already on the roster, Minnesota has the flexibility to sign Wentz if his visit goes well. Whether it results in a deal or not, the Vikings’ interest underscores their desire to reinforce the room behind McCarthy — and potentially turn to a proven veteran if needed.

Dolphins predicted to trade for $13M cornerback to fix secondary issues

The Dolphins may not be done reshaping their roster, and a new trade prediction has linked them to a potential fix for their most pressing need: the secondary.

Cleveland cornerback Greg Newsome II has emerged as a name to watch in Miami, with AOL’s Jordan O’Malley predicting the former first-round pick could be dealt to the Dolphins before the 2025 season begins.

“Newsome might not start in Cleveland this year and is heading into the final year of his rookie deal,” O’Malley wrote. “That’s the kind of situation Miami loves to exploit—low-cost, high-upside. They’d get a plug-and-play option for a shaky secondary, and Cleveland gets value now instead of letting him walk next spring.”

Newsome was selected in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft and enters 2025 on his fifth-year option, which carries a $13.3 million cap hit, per Spotrac. After making 42 starts in four seasons, he’s coming off an injury-shortened year in which he missed four games and made just three starts.

With Cleveland loaded at cornerback and Newsome not in line for a long-term extension, the timing could be right for a trade. Miami would get a starting-caliber outside corner at a reasonable price, with no major future commitment.

The Dolphins’ secondary has been one of the most criticized position groups this offseason. The decision to trade away Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh in exchange for Minkah Fitzpatrick and tight end Jonnu Smith left Miami with questions at cornerback.

Fitzpatrick, a one-time All-Pro, has struggled in recent seasons. He recorded just one interception over the last two years and allowed a 127.6 passer rating in coverage in 2024, according to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox.

NFL.com’s Ed Edholm was among those to question the Dolphins’ offseason direction, writing that the club “sent away the Dolphins’ leading pass catcher from 2024 and one of its most talented defenders,” while pointing out the team’s alarming lack of depth.

Trading for Newsome would give general manager Chris Grier a chance to stabilize that unit. Though not on Ramsey’s level, Newsome has proven experience, positional versatility, and a contract that wouldn’t hamper Miami’s flexibility beyond this season.

For a team facing rising pressure, this type of move could carry more than just roster value. It would send a message that Miami isn’t standing still — and still expects to contend in a competitive AFC.
