The penalties come after the league used digital tracking tools to confirm that a large number of Super Bowl tickets were resold above face value—violating league policy. The NFL has the capability to monitor whether the individuals who purchased tickets actually attended the game, revealing a widespread abuse of the system.
According to the Associated Press, which first reported the story, some individuals resold their tickets to “bundlers,” who then moved them to secondary markets at even steeper prices. The fines are substantial. Players who scalped their tickets will have to pay 150% of the face value and forfeit their right to purchase Super Bowl tickets in the future—unless they’re actually playing in the game. Club employees face a harsher penalty of 200% of the ticket value.
